The Good Bad Man
This early western from 1916 packs real emotional depth, and features intertitles by Anita Loos.
Dir Allan Dwan
With Douglas Fairbanks, Bessie Love, Sam De Grasse
With live piano accompaniment
Allan Dwan’s compact early western celebrates the landscape of the Old West that he so loved, while also packing real emotional depth. ‘Passin’ Through’ (Fairbanks) is a rootless bandit who robs to help children ‘born in shame’. During a run-in with a gang of outlaws he meets and falls for the adorable Sarah May (Love). The rhyming intertitles by Anita Loos and John Emerson add to the charm. Future director Victor Fleming was the film’s cinematographer.
Restoration by Cinémathèque Francaise, San Francisco Silent Film Festival and Film Preservation Society.
