Don’t miss Barbara Stanwyck as the Machiavellian moll of a dodgy boxing manager.
Dir Rouben Mamoulian
With Barbara Stanwyck, William Holden, Adolphe Menjou, Lee J Cobb
Rouben Mamoulian’s characteristically stylish yet sensitive adaptation of Clifford Odets’ play had Holden debuting as an impoverished young man torn between the fast money of the boxing circuit and his father’s hopes that he’ll become a great violinist. Stanwyck, terrific as the Machiavellian moll of a dodgy boxing manager (Menjou), had lead billing, and insisted Holden be kept on when the producers wanted to drop him.
