Gena Rowlands excels in Cassavetes’ gem about a tough-talking moll lumbered with a kid wanted by the Mob.
Dir John Cassavetes
With Gena Rowlands, John Adames, Julie Carmen, Buck Henry
Gena Rowlands is magnificent as the gangster’s moll reluctantly lumbered with a prematurely macho Latino boy whose family was killed by the Mob. As they wander New York seeking refuge from the hitmen who are searching for an incriminating book in the kid’s possession, Gloria’s sense of responsibility – to herself, her friends and the child – is conflicted. Thrilling, witty, unsentimental, this gem is far too seldom screened.
