Back in Hitchcockian territory with a witty, pacy thriller, Polanski has fun with Robert Harris’ story about a writer (Ewan McGregor) hired to ghost the memoirs of a former UK Prime Minister (Pierce Brosnan) living in secluded New England luxury; inevitably, things are not as they seem… Fine performances (Olivia Williams is especially good as the politician’s wife) and teasing echoes of recent history enhance a pleasingly suspenseful and intelligent entertainment.
