The first, in many ways superior film version of Patrick Hamilton’s stage play, set in Victorian London, in which a man tries to drive his wife insane – she doesn’t know of his criminal past – as he searches the house for precious jewels of which she’s also unaware. Walbrook and Wynyard are both excellent, while Dickinson keeps the pacing taut and the atmosphere properly unsettling.
