Le Garçu, which roughly translates as The Kid, proved to be Pialat’s swansong, and it contains remarkable scenes of intimacy and emotion, mostly centred on the director’s own three-year-old son (who is marvellously natural). Depardieu plays the irresponsible father who leaves his son’s mother but finds little solace with other women and keeps returning home for the sake of the young boy.
