An upper middle-class family’s lakeside holiday descends into terror when two young men dressed in tennis whites make a seemingly benign house call. A masterclass in building tension and unease, Michael Haneke’s home-invasion thriller is unlike anything else, particularly in the way it questions our consumption of violence as entertainment; we are made to feel complicit in what unfolds. It’s a startling rumination on the senselessness of violence and an excoriating portrait of cruelty.

Content warning: Contains scenes of torture, violence and implied animal harm.
