Lancaster and Kerr embracing in the surf remains the iconic image of this potent adaptation of James Jones’s pre-Pearl Harbor barrack-room saga. Notwithstanding Sinatra’s charismatic Oscar-winning turn as the platoon’s wiry scrapper Maggio, the stand-out performance comes from Clift as the fiercely independent Prewitt, who stoically resists his comrades’ increasingly brutish attempts to second him to the company’s boxing team. It’s a compelling portrait of self-determined masculinity that challenges conventional machismo.
Restored in 4K by Sony Pictures Entertainment at Cineric laboratory, from the original 1954 35mm fine grain master and one reel from the 35mm original negative. Restoration supervised by Grover Crisp.
The screening of From Here to Eternity on Wednesday 15 January 18:00 NFT1 will include an introduction.
