Made on a tiny budget by a first-time director, Four Springs became a surprise box-office hit in China. Set in a remote rural town in Southern Guizhou, this intimate and life-affirming observational documentary follows the director’s parents as they prepare for and celebrate New Year over a period of four years, capturing the family’s toils, singing, excursions in nature, visits to friends and extended families, funerals, reunions, and separation.
Followed by a book launch of Dr Victor Fan’s ‘Extraterritoriality: Locating Hong Kong Cinema and Media’ in the Blue Room.
