Akerman updates Joseph Conrad’s first novel to the 1950s, and peers into the ruins of white imperialism and greed. A floundering Dutch colonist’s dreams of gold are long sunk, but his possessive desires have transferred instead to his daughter, whose future he battles over with his Malaysian wife. The manner in which Akerman evokes a sense of place – including an entrancing two-minute night-time jungle pan – is like no other.
The screening of La Folie Almayer on Tuesday 18 March 17:50 NFT2 will include an introduction.
