In crime maestro Melville’s final film a cop (Delon) tries to discover who perpetrated a daring bank robbery, little realising that the gang leader happens to be a friend... Beginning with a mute, stunningly staged heist sequence, the movie is pared back to essentials, its narrative a near-abstract meditation on matters of honour, professionalism, betrayal and responsibility. The bluesy mood speaks of regret and disenchantment.

The screening on Wednesday 20 October will feature a pre-recorded intro by film critic Christina Newland.
