Melville’s final film returned to the near-abstract style of Le Samouraï, with the protracted opening bank robbery in torrential rain brilliantly establishing the murky mood. The tortuous plot involving drugs, informers and a further robbery even allows for the investigating cop (Delon) to be the gangleader’s friend, taking Melville’s abiding interest in the cat-and-mouse relationship between criminals and police to its logical conclusion.
