The first film in Leone’s ‘Dollars trilogy’ established both Eastwood’s nameless anti-hero and an enduring musical collaboration with Morricone. Leone looked to Rio Bravo’s bugle theme for inspiration and Morricone provided a glorious soundtrack as important as the cinematography in setting the film’s tone. Made on a modest budget and based on Kurosawa’s Yojimbo, it sees a stranger arrive in a town dominated by two warring families...
