The Fire Within: A Requiem for Katia and Maurice Krafft

Herzog’s interest in volcanoes and people immersed in dangerous obsessions had led him to include the Kraffts in his 2016 documentary Into the Inferno. Following the vulcanologists’ demise, he chronicled their lives and paid tribute to their work in this ‘requiem’, which (echoing Lessons in Darkness) combined their close footage of eruptions with appropriate music to create a hymn to nature terrifying in its bizarre beauty.
