Ernest Hemingway’s novel about an American ambulance driver falling for an English nurse in Italy in WWI becomes, in Borzage’s confident hands, a sublimely moving tale of transcendent passion; separated by circumstances, they strive, constantly, for togetherness. Charles Lang Jr’s cinematography offers a stunning mix of naturalism and expressionism, entirely appropriate to the Wagnerian intensity of the love story being played out.
