A Farewell to Arms

Probably still the best-filmed Hemingway, this is a rapturous romance set during the darkest days of WWI.

Frank Borzage’s version of Hemingway’s story about a womanising American WWI ambulance driver (Cooper) who unexpectedly falls madly in love with an English nurse (Hayes) is one of the most sublime romances in cinema. The three leads are superb (Menjou plays the American’s jealous, fatally meddling friend), Charles Lang’s camerawork is astonishing in its painterly precision, and Borzage’s commitment to the power of love total.
