The Extraordinary Miss Flower

A vibrant performance film whose catalyst is a box of love letters, this is a bravura but empathetic work that channels the spirit of creativity to cast its own magical spell. Described by its makers as ‘part film, part theatre, part fever dream’, the latest and highly innovative and compelling work from the directors of 20,000 Days on Earth, which premiered at the BFI London Film Festival, brings to life the remarkable true story of Geraldine Flower and the discovery of a suitcase of letters sent to her in the 1960s and 70s. These inspired acclaimed Icelandic singer-songwriter Emilíana Torrini to make a welcome return to the studio. The film takes the form of a series of performances by Torrini and her band, alongside long-time musical collaborator Simon Byrt, combined with dramatic scenes and readings from letters by other actors and musicians including Caroline Catz, Nick Cave and Alice Lowe. The result is a magical musical odyssey and a heartfelt love letter to the enduring power of creativity and friendship.
