26 May 1828: a youth is found in the streets of Nuremberg, with limited vocabulary and little knowledge of the world. His history obscure, it transpired that he may have been kept imprisoned since childhood. Henceforth he is dependent on those around him… Herzog uses his protagonist’s outsider status to shed light on the shortcomings of ‘civilisation’; the results are pointed, witty and very moving.
