Set in northern Spain in the 1950s, Erice’s immaculate, insightful exploration of a young girl’s changing attitudes to her adored but mysterious father is a lyrical psychological study packed with political and philosophical resonance. The exquisite and eloquent images – often reminiscent of Spanish still-life painting – create an enclosed, sometimes comforting, sometimes oppressive world haunted by painful secrets and unspoken emotions.
