The varied troubles of a celebrated filmmaker are laid bare in Fellini’s reflexive classic.

Fellini’s semi-autobiographical portrait of creative block is one of the great films about filmmaking. At the centre is Marcello Mastroianni as Guido Anselmi, the beleaguered auteur who’s assailed by a host of problems both professional and personal. The film’s influence has been profound – Todd Haynes, for instance, paid it affectionate homage in his distinctly Fellini-esque portrait of Bob Dylan, I’m Not There (2007).
