Stanwyck shines in this noir classic from Billy Wilder.
Dir Billy Wilder
With Barbara Stanwyck, Fred MacMurray, Edward G Robinson
Adapting James M Cain’s novella alongside Raymond Chandler, Wilder persuaded a reluctant Stanwyck – then Hollywood’s highest-paid female actor – to play the deviously manipulative Phyllis Dietrichson, who seduces an insurance agent (the likewise popular MacMurray) into a scam that necessitates her husband’s demise. The casting – like John Seitz’s camerawork and Miklós Rózsa’s score – paid off beautifully: the result was a noir classic.
