A definitive 1940s film noir about an adulterous couple driven to murder.
Dir Billy Wilder
With Barbara Stanwyck, Fred MacMurray, Edward G Robinson
A definitive film noir, this adaptation of James M Cain’s novel concerns an adulterous couple who kill the woman’s husband in an insurance scam. It boasts a superb script by Wilder and Raymond Chandler, terrific performances by Stanwyck and MacMurray as the lovers and by Robinson as a fraud investigator, moody chiaroscuro cinematography by John Seitz, and a fittingly doom-laden score by Miklós Rozsa.
