In Roeg’s greatest film (from a short story by Daphne Du Maurier), a couple go to Venice to recuperate following their daughter’s death by drowning, and meet a woman who claims to be in touch with the girl… Both a terrific thriller and a piercing study of grief and guilt, it turns Venice into a ghostly labyrinth of faint hopes and dark memories.

The screening on Wednesday 19 July will be introduced by Roger Luckhurst, Birkbeck, University of London.
