Pennebaker spoke of filming Dylan ‘whoever that is’ and captures his charismatic, elusive persona as he transforms from folk hero to rock star, while presenting as a rebel against corporate media (even as his manager is seen to drive hard bargains with the BBC and others). The transcendent musical performances are almost incidental to Dylan’s playful, astute and performatively combative interactions with his entourage, journalists and others. This pristine 35mm print is blown up from the film’s original 16mm gauge.

Ros Cranston

The songs are the heart of this unflashy film, in which folk legend Seeger performs in a London pub.
