Co-written by Bergman and occasional collaborator Herbert Grevenius, Molander’s film centres on a woman deserted by her husband after two decades of marriage. Forced to rent lodgings, she finds her loneliness leavened by the helpful attentions of her landlady’s son. Evidently Bergman’s interest in the emotional lives of women was by now keen; he made Summer Interlude (also co-scripted by Grevenius) the same year.
