Always fascinated by the passions and horrors of dynastic family life, Visconti turns to the perverse world of decadent German industrialists during the Third Reich. Charting the personal downfall of the Essenbacks, particularly the immoral and incestuous prodigal son Martin – Helmut Berger in a breakout role – it is Visconti’s most disturbing film, linking sexual deviancy and fascism with taboo-busting courage.
Contains scenes of sexual violence and self-harm.
