A couple of rebellious girls wreak havoc across a range of formal gatherings in this joyful 60s film.
Czech Republic 1966
Dir Vera Chytilová
With Ivana Karbanová, Jitka Cerhová, Marie Cesková
Chytilová described her film as ‘a philosophical documentary in the form of a farce.’ It’s about pleasure as a form of protest: Marie I and Marie II are two self-confessed hedonists who wreak wanton havoc across a range of official gatherings, creating confusion and chaos. The energetic female exuberance and rebellion against societal and gender conformity is a sheer joy to behold.
