The story of Cyrano de Bergerac has existed in many forms over several centuries but Rappeneau’s adaptation (now celebrating its 30th anniversary) is a delightful, tragi-comic tour de force with Depardieu’s Cyrano offering romantic tips to young Christian, a suitor with designs on Roxanne, whom Cyrano himself is keen to woo. Depardieu deftly embodies the nasally challenged hero of the piece, a man whose huge heart is partially hidden by insecurities about his own appearance. The film is both a celebration of love and a comic triumph, and it provides an opportunity to witness a classic performance by one of France’s greatest living actors.
