Unfolding over the course of one day, Arzner’s film focuses on a materialistic and calculating wife who believes love complicates marriage. Harriet Craig’s way of life, which she’ll stop at nothing to protect, comes under threat when her husband is caught up in a scandal. An excoriating adaptation of George Kelly’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play revels in high melodrama, it unfurls across former actor – and the first openly gay star – William Haines’ impressive set designs.
