Writer-director Henry Blake’s debut feature, which received its world premiere at the 2019 BFI London Film Festival, explores a disturbing criminal practice currently in the news. An original, stylish drama, it concerns a struggling mum (Madekwe) and her 14-year-old son Tyler (a compelling performance from newcomer Khan), who’s groomed (by a chilling Dickinson) and recruited into a lethal drug-selling network – a ‘county line’ that exploits vulnerable children and puts them to work nationwide. Inspired by his first-hand experience as a youth worker, Blake’s authentic and sensitive thriller has a huge heart, delivers a respectful, optimistic message, and boasts powerful performances all round.

The screenings on Fri 4 Dec 18:00 NFT1, Wed 9 Dec 20:40 NFT1 and Sat 12 Dec 20:40 NFT2 feature a pre-recorded Q&A with County Lines writer-director Henry Blake, and actors Conrad Khan and Ashley Madekwe, hosted by Variety and Observer critic Guy Lodge.
