Altman’s near-plotless, almost documentary-style account of the creation of a ballet production is one of the great dance movies.
Dir Robert Altman
With Neve Campbell, Malcolm McDowell, James Franco, the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago
Altman’s audaciously plotless movie focuses on chronicling a season in the life of the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago rather than following the uneventful love-life of dancer Ry (Campbell). Almost documentary-like, the film mostly shows discussions, rehearsals, preparations and performances; indeed, the imaginative combination of colour, composition, movement and music in the dance scenes is as vivid and delicate as a Degas painting.
