Coming to England with Floella Benjamin: an English and Anti-Bullying event for KS2

This event is intended for teachers and students only.

Floella Benjamin is well-known as a presenter of children’s TV classics Playschool, Playaway and latterly, performing in Sarah Jane’s Adventures. She is also a member of the House of Lords and is renowned for her charity work and stance on supporting children.

Coming to England is a stunning film adaptation, of her autobiography, directed by her husband, Keith Taylor, which charts her journey from Trinidad to Britain in the early 1960s. It is an inspiring story of how she adjusted to the challenges of her new life in Britain with the spirit and good humour for which she is known.

Floella Benjamin will introduce the screening and will lead a discussion of the film afterwards. Floella gives a very engaging, frank talk and gives expansive answers to pupils’ questions touching on issues of bullying and racism. Her inspiring approach is very uplifting for pupils and this event attracts retuning visits from schools year after year.

The book, Coming to England, is also National Literacy Strategy recommended reading for Year 6, and this screening provides a unique opportunity to begin or consolidate work around the book. A teachers’ resource pack is also included containing cross-curricular classroom activities.

As a Baroness in the House of Lords, Floella champions equality and promotes feelings of worth in children. Pupils leave this event truly believing her motto ‘I am worthy!’
