After completing a complex choreography, a group of dancers throw a party in their rehearsal space. However, someone has spiked the sangria, and the celebration turns deadly. A king of the New French Extremity movement, Gaspar Noé’s is synonymous with discomfort. This film, an inspired fusion of modern dance and arthouse horror, with a thumping soundtrack, is one of his best. As it transforms from an exhilarating dance piece into mayhem and unthinkable horror, Climax becomes a masterclass in raising anxiety.

BBC/Academy Films 2020. Director Jonathan Glazer. 10min

Depicting a real-life dance epidemic, this short film is a wonderful micro-demonstration of Glazer’s (and frequent collaborator Mica Levi’s) ability to create intense and nauseating atmospheres.

Our IMAX screening of Climax on Saturday 6 July 23:00 will be introduced by Mike Muncer, host of The Evolution of Horror podcast.
