This Shakespearian mash-up is a celebration of one of the greatest roles in theatre and it fulfilled a lifelong ambition by Welles to play Sir John Falstaff, the jolly but vain and boastful advisor to Prince Hal. Despite being under-appreciated upon its release and ignored by Academy voters, Chimes at Midnight is now seen as a masterpiece, and was the work that Welles claimed to be his best.
