MGM’s sumptuous version of Alexandre Dumas’ La Dame aux Camélias boasts what is arguably Garbo’s greatest performance as Parisian courtesan Marguerite Gautier, kept by a wealthy baron but drawn to the young Armand (Taylor) who loves her despite her scandalous past. Cukor’s characteristically sensitive, sure-footed direction and the luminous camerawork (by William Daniels and Karl Freund) make for elegance and emotional depth.
