With typical perversity, Altman followed his smash hit M*A*S*H with this extremely engaging blend of escapist fantasy, allegorical parable, social satire and movie parody. Set in Houston, it concerns a latterday Icarus building wings and learning to fly, while a vain cop investigates strange murders in the city, and an eccentric lectures on bird behaviour. The result is a comic cautionary tale about freedom, power, corruption and idealism.
