When 11-year-old Parvana’s father is taken by the Taliban, she cuts her hair and passes herself off as a boy. It’s the only way she can go out and work, because women are forbidden to go anywhere unaccompanied. As a boy, she is free to roam the war-torn city. But as the sole breadwinner, Parvana also finds herself in terrible danger. At all times respectful and celebratory in its depiction of Afghan history and culture, this is an exceptional film about a girl who is empowered to forge her own destiny and a call for all women’s voices to be heard.
