It’s tough to grow up as a teenage boy in LA’s South Central in the 1980s and early 90s. Tre Styles is taught self-discipline, moral responsibility and Black pride by his father, but it’s increasingly hard for him to keep to the straight and narrow in a community blighted by poverty, police harassment, crack addiction and gun-toting gangs. In Singleton’s strikingly assured feature debut, his direction is forthright and forceful, while a top-notch cast, which includes an impressive turn by NWA’s Ice Cube, ensures that the drama always rings true.
