A long-time supporter of De Palma, Pauline Kael wrote ecstatically of Blow Out: ‘It’s hallucinatory, and it has a dreamlike clarity and inevitability.’ She argued that the film, about a sound engineer who believes he has accidentally recorded evidence of a crime, takes the viewer to ‘the place where genre is transcended and what we’re moved by is an artist’s vision.’
