Ray’s magnificent Second World War drama chronicles the progress of a British army unit sent on a perilous mission behind Nazi lines in the Libyan desert, and centres on the fraught relationship between the insecure disciplinarian major (Jürgens) and his more capable captain (Burton, at his very best). Superbly shot in black and white CinemaScope, it eschews conventional heroics to focus on the bleak ironies of the rivals’ predicament.
