A working-class mother is ready to sacrifice everything to enter her daughter in a competition at Cinecittà. Here, Visconti broke away from the principles of neorealism, adding melodrama to Zavattini’s story. Despite the changes made to the original screenplay, the writer’s neorealist ideas remain a powerful influence. Anna Magnani gives a tour de force performance as the mother – a character moulded around her magnificent emotional fierceness.

Restored in 4K in 2023 by CSC – Cineteca Nazionale in collaboration with Compass Film at the Studio Cine S.r.l. laboratory.

Joint ticket available with The Women of Italian Neorealism on Tuesday 4 June £16, concessions £13 (Members pay £2 less).
