The unruly girls of St Trinian’s school are a law unto themselves, which is hardly surprising when their adult role models are so lacking. Inspired by Ronald Searle’s cartoons, The Belles of St. Trinian’s features the inimitable Alastair Sim in dual roles as both headmistress Millicent Fritton and her brother Clarence. The film sparked a successful British comedy franchise, spawning three sequels and a reboot over 50 years later.
