In the future, AI offers humans the opportunity to cleanse themselves of inherited trauma and to ‘purify’ strong emotions from their genetics. Gabrielle meets Louis when she attempts this procedure and discovers that they share a powerful connection – as if they’ve known each other forever. Loosely inspired by Henry James’ novella The Beast in the Jungle, and exploring concerns about where excessive technology and connectivity might be taking us, Bonello’s ambitious epic is fantastic – equal parts rapturous and disturbing. Moving through different genres, and fusing together intriguing dream logic, erotic atmospheres and some spectacular set-pieces, The Beast has been compared to the work of David Lynch and David Cronenberg, but it journeys into a world that is uniquely its own, one that is of a piece with the output of this provocative filmmaker.
