The Japanese title of Ozu’s final film – meaning ‘The Taste of Mackerel Pike’ – alludes only indirectly to autumn, but this becalmed masterpiece does feel autumnal with its tale of an elderly widower persuaded by friends that his daughter should marry; like him, she’s very aware that leaving home would increase his loneliness. Witty yet poignant, the film boasts an exquisitely muted colour palette.
