The journey depicted in Bresson’s heartrendingly beautiful film is undertaken by a donkey, passing from owner to owner in rural southern France as he suffers and bears mute witness to the cruel follies of humanity. Sentimentality is avoided throughout, yet the restraint of the performances and camerawork and the terse, clipped narrative combine to produce a parable of massive emotional force.
