John Huston’s much-imitated heist movie – famously a favourite of Jean-Pierre Melville – is a no-nonsense adaptation of WR Burnett’s novel about a gang of thieves that falls apart after a daring robbery. More film gris than film noir, it boasts superb camerawork by Harold Rosson and a great cast of familiar, mostly world-weary faces, including, briefly and less wearily, a young Marilyn Monroe.
