No film by Victor Kossakovsky is short of memorable images. However, Aquarela offers an embarrassment of riches as the filmmaker travels the world, presenting us with footage that showcases the awe-inspiring and terrifying power of our planet’s life force: water. The film’s technical virtuosity is matched by Kossakovsky’s curiosity about the way water moves, creates and destroys. What he captures – in the most minute detail thanks to his decision to employ high-frame-rate shooting (96 frames per second) – and the way he captures it moves the film away from any conventional nature documentary and closer to art.
