In this exhilarating ride through the Gershwin songbook, Gene Kelly stars as a former GI-turned-bohemian artist, torn between two women. The climactic ballet sequence, choreographed and directed by Kelly, remains one of Hollywood’s greatest dance numbers – an explosion of emotion and Technicolor. Hardly surprising that La La Land’s Damien Chazelle acknowledged it as ‘a movie that we just pillaged’.
