Widower Shuhei attempts to come to terms with his daughter’s future and Japanese society’s drive for modernisation. The resulting tensions are subtly yet vividly portrayed through Ozu’s characteristically detailed focus on gestures, while capturing daily life in the interiors of domestic, work and public spaces.
The screening of An Autumn Afternoon on Wednesday 19 February 18:10 NFT1 will include an introduction.
