TV Drama - Contexts and Representation: a GCSE Study Day

This event is intended for teachers and students only.

This study day is an ideal introduction to considering prevalent themes and filmic style in films of the celebrated award-winning director, Pedro Almodóvar, and also provides rich learning opportunities for students to improve their understanding of Spanish cinema and culture. The day has been structured in response to the new A Level specifications, grouping some of the prescribed films according to key social themes apparent in Almodóvar’s work. In the morning a clip-based presentation will give an overview of his work including narrative themes, character archetypes, visual style and influences, casting and intertextuality. As the new specifications feature Almodóvar’s Todo sobre mi madre (1999) and Volver (2006) as prescribed texts, we will focus in particular on these films and explore how themes, characterisation and filmic style, are apparent in both these films through studying key scenes and engaging with in-depth textual analysis. In the afternoon there will be an introduced screening of one of these films, chosen by teachers, plus Q&A. A resource pack will be available on the day to continue learning in the classroom.
